What is the verse that defines your life? Which verse stands out to you in the Bible that you always come back to? What verse do you pray over yourself time and time again?
Discovering a life verse can be a transformative experience. A life verse is a passage from the Bible that speaks to your heart and guides you through life’s challenges and decisions. In this blog, we’ll explore how to find your life verse and how it can provide guidance and comfort in your daily life.
My Journey to Finding My Life Verse
When I was 16, my sister gave me a Bible for my birthday. On the front was the verse Jeremiah 29:11. This became my life verse. Every time I wondered what to do or where to go, I would refer back to this verse and remember that God had a plan for my life—a plan for good and not evil, for hope and a future.
I’m the type of person who loves a plan and likes to know what is coming next. As much as I like the idea of surprises, I’m not very good with them or with change.
Navigating Life with My Life Verse
Throughout high school and college, I had questions about my career, which college to attend, and who I would marry. As graduation approached, I had to decide where to go to school and what job to pursue. I didn’t date much and never had a boyfriend, so as my friends started dating and getting married, I often wondered when it would be my turn.
During this time, I spent many hours reading my Bible, praying, and writing out my prayers in a prayer journal. When I prayed, I would recite Jeremiah 29:11 and believe that God would answer the questions and prayers I had. It didn’t happen instantly, but God did answer my questions. He guided me to the right college, career, and husband. His plans are good, and He wants good things for His children. We have to trust the process and rely on Him.
Answering Questions About God’s Plan
Take It Step by Step
You don’t have to answer all the questions right now. From my experience, I know that God’s timing is not our timing. He is omnipresent and all-knowing, and His timing is perfect. It’s incredibly hard to wait for plans to unfold, but take it day by day and step by step, and lean into Him as you do.
Write Out Your Prayers
When I was deciding on a career path, I wrote out a list of my prayers. Writing my prayers allowed me to pray specifically for what I needed and helped me to declare truth over my prayers.
When choosing a college, I initially planned to attend a community college for two years and then transfer to a larger four-year college. As the time drew closer, I had to decide whether to transfer or stay. Having my prayers written down allowed me to see how God answered my prayers. I felt led to stay at the community college, which saved me money and kept me from going into debt.
When God answered my prayers and led me down different paths, I wrote the answers beside my initial prayers. This practice allowed my faith to grow and showed me God’s faithfulness and the promises He gives us.
Speak It Out
My life verse is Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Every time I felt down or discouraged about not knowing where to go or not having a boyfriend, I reminded myself of this verse. Speaking truth over my life has not only strengthened my faith in Jesus but also my trust in Him. It has given me peace when anxiety and fear try to take over. When you have a verse that speaks to you, speak it out when you get discouraged or when your prayers aren’t being answered. For me, Jeremiah 29:11 brings encouragement, confidence, peace, and joy.
How to Find Your Life Verse
1. Pray
Prayer is the best way to know what God wants you to declare over your life. Even though Jeremiah 29:11 was on the front of my Bible, it didn’t sink into my spirit until I began to pray. The more I prayed, the more this verse came up in my prayer life. It began to sink deep into my soul.
2. Read Your Bible
It sounds simple, but you can’t know what verse to pray for yourself if you haven’t been in the Word. When reading your Bible, pray and ask God to make the scripture come alive and stand out to you. The Bible and alive and will speak to you, if you are willing to surrender your thoughts and spend time reading and learning.
3. Seek Wisdom
Ask people strong in their faith who know you well to help you find the verse that speaks to you. Those closest to you often see what you are struggling with or need prayer for the most. They can highlight scriptures that might speak to you. This has been an area at times I have struggled in. I don’t like asking for help, but I found when I do, I leave encouraged.
Praying Over My Children
As a mama, I have been praying over my children since they were in the womb. I have prayed over their hearts and characteristics, and more recently, I have been praying scripture over my girls. When my three-year-old is afraid or fearful, I recite 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” We declare this out loud, and I believe that over time, she will begin to do this for herself.
Being a Mama is a ministry and we get the chance as parents to encourage and speak life into our children. Other than Jesus, we know them better than anyone else. We know what they struggle with and how they function. Finding verses to speak and pray over your children will deepen their faith and give them peace in times of difficulty.
I end with the same questions I posed at the beginning: What is the verse that defines your life? Which verse stands out to you in the Bible that you always come back to? What verse do you pray over yourself time and time again?
