Prayer has always been a cornerstone of my life, shaping my relationship with God and guiding my actions. Growing up in a church-going family, I learned early on the power of praying over specific needs and desires. This practice has profoundly influenced my journey, especially in how I pray over my family.
During my prayer journey, I have come to realize how important it is to write down your prayers. Having a prayer journal and writing down your prayers will allow you to stay focused while praying and, most importantly, help you see how faithful God is when He answers your prayers. Keep reading to find out how a prayer journal has helped me in praying over my family!
How to Pray for Your Future Husband: A Guide for Women of Faith
One of the main things that I was told as a young girl was to pray specifically for my husband. What did I desire in my husband, and what did I look for in a spouse? After pondering these questions, I wrote down a list of what I desired in my husband on a scratch piece of paper, and I began to pray over him.
At first, it was mostly physical attributes like height or looks, but as the years progressed and my relationship with Jesus grew deeper, my prayers began to change. I was given a journal and decided to write a new list of character traits for my future husband.
The list of attributes I’d pray for were:
- Strong in his faith
- That he put Jesus above everything
- That he was kind and respectful
- A hard worker and would take care of his family
- He cooked (I hated cooking or the thought of learning)
- To be protected and safe
I can say that God answered these prayers in my husband and more! God grew my relationship with Him as He was preparing my heart for my husband. He was preparing me to be a wife while listening to me pray for my husband.
Being able to write down a date beside these prayers was so encouraging in my walk with God! I spent years praying over this list, and there were definitely times I wanted to quit and didn’t pray as fervently for my husband, but every time I came back across this list, I would pray over him. I am so glad I wrote this list down and how it encouraged me through the years to keep waiting for the husband God had for me!
Praying Over Your Children: A Mother’s Journey and Tips
When I became pregnant with our oldest, I began praying over her. As I did with praying for my husband, I began praying over our daughter and wrote down my prayers for her.
My list included:
- Respectful
- Kind
- Loving
- Obedient
- To have compassion on others the way Christ does us
- To love Jesus at a young age and never depart from Him
- For her to have curly hair like me
I have seen these character traits coming out in her as she grows. Every time she waits for her turn on the slide at the playground or wonders why people are sick and need help, I know my prayers are being answered over her, and I love being able to write about it in my prayer journal. Going to church and watching her desire to learn about Bible stories has also given encouragement to these prayers and shown me that God is faithful and trustworthy.
As she has gotten older, my prayers have increased and changed a little here and there. I still pray for her to be those things, but I also have begun praying scripture over her and speaking life into her!
When my three-year-old is afraid or fearful, I recite 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” We declare this out loud, and I believe that over time, she will begin to do this for herself. As she grows and gets a little older, I plan to start a prayer journal with her and help her write down her prayers to pray over herself and her family.
Top Bible Verses to Pray Over Your Children for Guidance and Protection
A list of scriptures I’ve written down and prayed over my children:
- I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:14
This scripture is an encouragement that God designed them wonderfully and how valued they are to God and to their family.
- For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11
This is my favorite scripture and has helped me so much in my faith walk. I pray this over my children because there will be a time they won’t know what to do, but they have hope because God does, and He will help and guide them.
- This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
Much like 2 Timothy 1:7, this scripture has come as an encouragement for my daughter in times when she is a little nervous. When she has tried new things, I tell her she is strong and courageous and she can do this!
- Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6
I believe the way my husband and I are raising our children, they will grow up to love God and seek Him always. This is encouragement to me and him as we raise our girls to know and love Jesus.
These are just a few scriptures I’ve prayed, and some you can start with, too!
