Today, we honor the lives of those who fought and died for our freedom. We honor the fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and friends who went to war so we can live in a country where we can worship freely, vote, and express our opinions. Without these brave men and women, our freedoms would not exist.
I am profoundly thankful for my grandfather, who served in the Korean War, and my husband’s grandfathers, who both served in World War II. These men demonstrated what it means to lay down one’s life for family, friends, and country. Their sacrifices were not just for their time but for future generations—my generation, my children’s generation. They understood the bigger picture and knew that without their sacrifice, we wouldn’t be free. These men, and countless others, embody the spirit of John 15:13:
"Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends." - John 15:13
In John 15, Jesus talks about loving each other and commands us in verse 12: “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” The men and women who laid down their lives for their country were following this commandment, loving us and their country deeply.
How can we honor the men and women who served and died for our freedom? By loving each other, just as Jesus called us to. Today, show love to your family and honor those who fought for our freedom.
