Kids thrive on routines. When I was teaching, one requirement at the schools I worked at was to have a daily schedule. Children need structure and to know what to expect each day. Having a routine can even reduce tantrums because the child knows what’s coming next.
We all know why routines are important, but how do you actually create a family schedule—whether as a stay-at-home parent or a teacher? Making schedules doesn’t have to be difficult or overwhelming. Keep reading for some simple tips on how to create a daily schedule for parents or your classroom!
Step One: Identify Your Priorities
The first step to making a family schedule is identifying what’s important to you and your family. Ask yourself, “What are the things I need to get done daily or weekly?” This was the very question I asked myself when I began planning out our days and weeks as a stay-at-home mom. Once I identified what we needed to accomplish each day and week, I wrote it down.
Step Two: Write It Down
After identifying your top priorities, the next step is to write them down. Putting your tasks on paper helps you visualize and plan your schedule better. It ensures you won’t forget anything and allows you to see the bigger picture. Writing things down is a crucial step in creating a family routine that works for everyone.
Step Three: Find Your Most Productive Time
Next, evaluate when you’re most productive. Do you get more done in the morning or afternoon? Is nap time your most efficient window, or do you prefer to tackle tasks while your children are awake? Consider whether there are tasks your kids can help with. These questions will guide you in planning a daily schedule for parents that allows you to get the most done.
Step Four: Create Your Family Schedule and Stick to It
Now it’s time to write down your actual schedule. Writing it down makes you more apt to follow it and stay accountable. Of course, things may change throughout the day, but having a schedule or list gives you a framework. Plus, it helps your children know what to expect, which fosters a calmer environment. A consistent family schedule reduces stress for both parents and kids.
My Daily Routine as a Stay-at-Home Mom
I’ve followed these steps when planning my own family routine. For me, the most important daily tasks include preparing meals, nap time, finding some “me” time, and tackling one cleaning task each day.
I break down my weekly schedule by assigning one cleaning task to each day. This way, I don’t feel overwhelmed by housework and can focus on spending quality time with my kids.
Here’s a look at our Daily Schedule:
- Wake up & say goodbye to Daddy
- Breakfast
- Clean up
- Personal hygiene (teeth brushing, bathroom, etc.)
- Playtime and/or errand (I stay flexible here depending on my youngest’s naps. Sometimes we go out before her morning nap, other times afterward. I also use this time to complete one cleaning task while the girls play.)
- Lunch
- Clean Up
- Nap time (for my oldest, and sometimes my youngest)
- Afternoon activity
- Prep and cook dinner
- Dinner
- Clean up and Playtime
- Baths
- Bed
My Weekly Cleaning Schedule
- Monday: Laundry
- Tuesday: Finish laundry & Clean Kitchen
- Wednesday: Dust & Wipe Down High Touch Surfaces
- Thursday: Clean Bathrooms
- Friday: Clean Floors (sweep, mop, vacuum)
I also try to do a sweep around and pick up anything out of place for about 3-5 minutes. This helps me to feel like everything is clean as well.
I hope this helps you create a family schedule that works for your family. Remember, what works for me might look different for you—and that’s totally okay! The key is finding a routine that suits your family’s needs.
Happy planning!
